Not so much a “draft and follow” as a “draft and college”, Desharnais finished out his sophomore, junior, and senior years at Providence College, appearing in Edmonton only in summer dev camps. That summer he was near the bottom of our summer prospect rankings at #33, squashed in between #32 Evan Campbell and #34 Aidan Muir. A local wag called him a “21st round draft pick”, and that seems a fair assessment. It was the seventh and last round of the 2016 Draft, in Desharnais’ third and last year of eligibility. Vincent Desharnais became an “instant legend” a mere 6½ years after the Oilers initially drafted him at #183 overall. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. And when somebody actually does it, they become (local) legend. Thing is, one just never knows who out of that larger crew of hopefuls might be the one who beats the odds and makes it all the way to the big leagues. Not one player in the current group is a sure thing, but there’s a handful of guys in the 25% to 75% range, and a few more lower than that but non-zero. One would hope that even Ken Holland’s most ardent haters would give him a stick tap for that tidy exchange. Already 20, he’ll join Bakersfield Condors this season, not two or three years down the line as might have been expected from that fifth round pick. A big right-shot two-way centre, the three-year (!) captain of Red Deer Rebels was immediately signed by Edmonton. When NYR were unable to sign him, Oilers picked up his rights for a late fifth-rounder in one of the more underrated trades of the summer. The first two were Oilers picks, while Grubbe was an early third-round pick by the New York Rangers. Even in a so-called down year (the Oilers prospect pool ranked 28th recently), I found the event charged with optimism and enthusiasm and potential. Was fun to make it down to the perfect-for-the-purpose Downtown Community Arena to take in the atmosphere of the event. Dev Camp is the earliest outlier of the new season, and for this observer at least, a time for optimism. This week has offered local fans access to another side of the game, namely Oilers Development Camp that wrapped up on Thursday after four days of on-ice sessions. Might stress a few Oil fans as well.īut enough about that for now. The other major piece of business revolves around RFA Evan Bouchard, who is not yet eligible for arbitration but who has nonetheless made a strong case for a healthy raise that might further stress Ken Holland’s already strained cap budget. Biggest takeaway from that is that McLeod is now off-limits for offer sheets, and will ultimately come to terms with the Oilers, be it by arbitrator’s decision or - far more likely - a settlement between player and club well before that nasty process begins. No more signings since, with the biggest news being that RFA Ryan McLeod has filed for arbitration. ![]() Only the bonus-heavy pact of Connor Brown moves the needle on the big club. The Oilers made a 2-for-0 trade to open up some cap space, used all 3 of their untraded selections at the Draft but dealt for no more, then signed 5 players to NHL-minimum contracts on Jul 01. Not quite so fast here in Edmonton, where roster and salary cap considerations dominated the discussion but with only marginal progress to this point.
